1/4″ equivalent is M6 and the I.D is 0.35mm bigger
1/2″ equivalent is M12 and the I.D is 0.7mm smaller
5/16″ equivalent is M8 and the I.D is 0.06mm smaller
7/16″ equivalent is M12 and the I.D is 0.89mm bigger.
All sizes will be fit for purpose in the majority of circumstances.
Repair Washershave a particularly large outside diameter
Repair Washers are used with threaded fasteners (for example a bolt and a nut), designed to increase the load distribution.
- Mudguard (penny) washers have an extra large outer diameterto either spread a load more or to straddle a damaged/ oversized hole.
- Typically used to spread the tightening load over a greater area than a conventional flat washer.
- Bright Zinc Plate (BZP) finish offers resistance to corrosion.

What is an Engineering Washer?
A washer has multiple purposes depending on its shape, form and material. Generally speaking, a washer is used to:
- protect the surface of fastened materials,
- spread the load/ pressure at the hold points of fastened materials,
- assist with tightening and loosening of a fastener,
- control the spacing of connecting components
Additional Information
A washer is a thin plate (typically disk-shaped) with a hole (typically in the middle) that is normally used to distribute the load of a threaded fastener, such as a screw or nut. Other uses are as a spacer, spring (belleville washer, wave washer), wear pad, preload indicating device, locking device, and to reduce vibration (rubber washer). Washers usually have an outer diameter (OD) about twice the width of their inner diameter (ID).
